No kidding.
There’re really 14,470 ETFs in the world.
Here’s the number indicated on Tradingview screener:

I mean, I knew there were many ETFs, but I didn’t expect it to be this many.
Here are some countries with more than 1,000 ETF listings:
- US: 4,728
- China: 1,696
- Canada: 1,487
- South Korea: 1,316
- Germany: 1,068
Granted, we may not care about all the ETFs. But the US, UK, and HK are popular venues among global investors. Collectively, they have 5,677 ETFs to choose from.
And we’re not done – the number keeps rising. So expect the investment options to expand, not shrink.

Given so many ETFs to choose from, have you ever felt overwhelmed and ended up doing nothing?
Or have you ever wondered how the ETFs you currently hold compare with the wider universe available today?
It’s Not Just the Number – It’s the Breadth
It isn’t just the number of ETFs that’s intimidating. The breadth of products is wider than you think – you can buy almost anything with ETFs.
There are different asset classes. Equity and fixed income ETFs, in different varieties, let you construct your core stock-bond portfolio.
Stock ETFs can be separated by geography, from New Zealand to Chile, covering many countries and time zones. Or you can pick a particular sector like tech. Or differentiate by styles, from value to growth. Prefer dividend focus? All available. And don’t forget thematic ETFs that reflect trends you’re following, such as clean energy or AI.
Bond ETFs cover everything from investment grade to high yield, from short duration to long-term bonds, across various geographies.
Other asset classes like crypto and commodities have also made their way into ETFs. For example, some markets now list ETFs that track Bitcoin’s price.

For those watching inflation and looking at commodities, ETFs also cover that space. Some markets list ETFs linked to things like corn, wheat, or sugar.

For those watching rare earth developments, some markets list ETFs that track companies involved in that sector.

If you’ve been following developments in China’s semiconductor industry, there are HK-listed ETFs that track companies in that space.

Or maybe you’re curious about gaining exposure to early-stage tech companies rather than just publicly listed ones. Some markets even offer ETFs, like DXYZ, that hold shares in private tech firms such as SpaceX, OpenAI and others. Unlike traditional VC funds, these ETFs trade on the market and don’t come with lock-in periods.

The Paradox of Choice
These are more specialised products, and many investors treat them as niche or thematic exposures rather than core holdings. But what about building your core? Even constructing a globally diversified portfolio leaves you with many choices.
There are many well-known index families and ETF providers, such as MSCI, FTSE, iShares, or Vanguard, each offering different approaches and methodologies. How important are expense ratios, fund size, and years in existence?
Having more options sounds great, but it also creates a paradox of choice. With so many ETFs out there, it’s easy to get stuck and keep putting things off because you’re unsure what to pick.
ETFs used to be simple when there were fewer of them. Now the choices have exploded, and it’s a whole different beast.
