Why I Opened a Financial Planning Centre in Jurong East

I never imagined I would one day open a neighbourhood shop. Yet, after months of planning, here I am with Phillip Investor Centre Lite in Jurong East, run by my Holistic Wealth Planners team.

The space is small, but the purpose is deeply personal. I believe holistic wealth planning should be within everyone’s reach. I wanted a place where someone could walk in, sit down and have a proper conversation about their finances.

Why I wanted a physical centre

With so much of financial services moving online, opening a physical centre might seem unusual. For me, the growing amount of information online was one of the reasons to do it.

We can scroll through investment opinions, watch financial videos and ask AI questions within seconds. But more content does not necessarily mean more clarity. Information can conflict or be inaccurate. Even a correct answer may not suit the person reading it.

The question I want to help people answer is: “What does all this mean for me?”

Why the human touch matters

Financial planning is ultimately personal. Two people with the same income can have very different responsibilities, worries and hopes. A plan needs to reflect those differences.

I believe in technology and AI, and their ability to make our work more efficient. But I also value someone sitting across the table, listening to your concerns and helping you talk through a difficult decision.

That human connection is what I want this centre to provide: someone who takes the time to understand you before discussing what to do next.

How the Lite idea took shape

As I thought about making planning more accessible, I kept coming back to a simple question: how much space do we really need for a meaningful conversation?

A few tables, some chairs and advisers ready to listen can be enough. We do not need a large unit in a Grade A office tower. A familiar neighbourhood location can make that first conversation feel easier.

Keeping the centre small helps us manage costs while bringing us closer to the community. Being within reach and approachable matters more to me than having an impressive office.

A financial clinic for the neighbourhood

One idea I hope to build through this centre is what I call a financial clinic.

We go for medical check-ups to understand how we’re doing. We check our blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and other health indicators. But how often do we check our financial health?

Do we have enough emergency funds to fall back on?

Is our insurance coverage enough for our needs?

Do our investments suit our goals and the time we have?

Are we on track for retirement?

Have we thought about how our wealth will be passed on?

I often use the example of seeing a doctor. If you’re feeling unwell, you can Google your symptoms or ask AI and get a very detailed answer. But would that completely replace seeing a doctor? For me, probably not. I’d still want someone to understand what’s happening, ask the right questions and assess my situation.

I see financial planning in a similar way. Technology and AI can give us information and make the planning process faster. But for an important decision, I believe many people still want a real person across the table who takes the time to understand them.

That’s what I want our financial clinic to offer: diagnosis first, solution later. Let’s understand your situation before we talk about what you might need.

A place to learn about investing and financial planning

I’d also like the centre to become a small place for the community to learn about money. Over the years, we’ve held many seminars and webinars, and we’ll continue to do that. Having our own space gives us a chance to have smaller, more informal discussions too.

We can have lunchtime talks and evening investment sharing sessions on CPF, retirement, investing, insurance or whatever people are trying to understand at the time.

It doesn’t always have to be a seminar with 100 people. Sometimes 10 or 15 people asking questions and sharing their concerns can make for a very useful discussion.

If someone walks past, notices a topic they’re interested in and decides to join us, I’d be happy with that. That’s the kind of place I hope this centre can become: somewhere people feel comfortable coming in to learn something new.

A personal milestone and a beginning

Opening this centre is a milestone for me because it was never something I expected to do. But I see this as just the beginning.

Jurong East gives us a place to put this belief into practice and learn what the community needs. If we can make holistic wealth planning more accessible here, I hope we can eventually bring the same idea to other neighbourhoods across Singapore.

My vision for a name people turn to

When I think of fast food, McDonald’s comes to mind. For groceries, it is FairPrice. For flying, it is Singapore Airlines.

For holistic wealth planning, I do not yet have one name that comes to mind in the same way. My ambition is to build a go-to name for holistic wealth planning that people know, trust and feel comfortable approaching.

I know that trust takes time to earn. It starts with how we welcome each person and how well we help them understand their own situation.

This centre is my first step towards a planning centre within reach of people across Singapore. For now, it begins in Jurong East, with a few tables and an invitation from me to you: come in, sit down and let’s talk.
