Sheng Siong Fell 14% in 2 Days. Sales at Its Existing Stores Are Slowing. How Bad Is It?

Introduction

In late 2026, Singapore’s defensive market darling, Sheng Siong Group Ltd (SGX: OV8), experienced a sharp 14% sell-off over two trading days. The catalyst? Its Q3 FY2026 results revealed that while headline revenue rose 6.2%, comparable same-store sales actually shrank.

Driven by a high base effect from previous government vouchers, rising labour costs, and a maturing domestic footprint, Sheng Siong is transitioning from an agile underdog into a macro-sensitive retail titan. This analysis examines its background, recent headwinds, financials, valuation, and whether the stock is a buy.

From Heartland Underdog to Retail Titan

Founded by the Lim brothers in the 1980s, Sheng Siong built its empire serving Singapore’s public housing (HDB) estates. As a smaller player, it successfully outmanoeuvred major competitors by securing small HDB retail spaces, cutting out middlemen through direct farm sourcing, and maintaining razor-thin margins with high inventory turns.

By late 2026, the group had expanded to 92 stores in Singapore. However, growth dynamics have fundamentally shifted.

From Micro to Macro, Sheng Siong is now tied directly to Singapore’s broader economic health and wage inflation. It is the second biggest supermarket chain in Singapore with nearly 100 stores today behind NTUC with 230 stores and counting (including various Fairprice formats and Cheers). Finding new catchments is difficult and open-tender bidding for new HDB commercial spaces has driven rental costs higher.

Sheng Siong occupies a distinct position in the market, offering affordable groceries (colloquially – cheap and fresh). While luxury grocers target expats, Sheng Siong wins budget-conscious households via everyday low pricing and wet-market-style fresh produce.

3Q Financial review

The Q3 FY2026 earnings shock exposed key vulnerabilities:

Weak Same-Store Sales Growth (SSSG): Existing mature stores experienced weakening sales growth, meaning top-line growth is entirely reliant on opening new outlets.

Additionally there was a high base effect as 3Q2025 was boosted by nationwide SG60 government voucher disbursements.

There are also concerns spending shifting overseas. The upcoming Johor Bahru-RTS link would make weekend grocery and household shopping in Malaysia much easier for many, especially residents living in the northern part of Singapore .

Competition continues to intensify with heartland minimarts, specialised fresh produce chains, and aggressive quick-commerce delivery apps capturing younger demographics and squeezing basket sizes.

Across the world and less so but however also prevalent in Singapore is Consumer Fatigue as persistent domestic cost-of-living pressures have made shoppers hyper-selective.

Financial Performance & Variance Analysis

Financial Summary

Metric (S$ Millions)FY2022FY2023FY2024FY2025FY 2026 (3Q Extrapolated) – illustration only
Revenue1339.51367.71428.71570.0~1,729.1
Gross Margin (%)29.4%30.030.5%31.3%~32.0%
Net Profit133.6134.5137.5149.2~167.3

Key highlights:

  • FY22–FY23: Revenue growth plateaued as pandemic pantry-stocking faded and consumers returned to dining out.
  • FY24–FY25: Revenue accelerated driven by 12 new store openings and government support packages, while gross margins climbed as a result of better housebrand penetration.
  • 9M FY2026: Gross profit margin rose, but net profit margin dipped slightly because operating expenses, specifically mandatory Progressive Wage Model (PWM) labour hikes and depreciation costs also increased.

Valuation and Share Price Performance

The 14% correction pushed the stock down to roughly S$2.36. Its P/E has compressed to 21x with analysts looking at a forward P/E of around 17.5x – 18.5x, aligning with historical multi-year lows.

Backed by zero net debt and strong free cash flow, Sheng Siong offers a dividend yield of 3.2% (70% payout ratio).

Consensus target prices linger around S$3, pointing to notable double-digit upside if cyclical headwinds abate or a step improvement in business performance happens.

Is It a Buy?

It is not a terminal or structural breakdown. The business remains highly profitable with zero debt and a 32% gross margin. However, negative same-store sales indicate domestic saturation and margin compression risks from sticky labor inflation.

The market remains competitive, with sustained promotions pressuring revenue and margins, and the JB-SG RTS Link may intensify cross-border price competition from February 2027, though Sheng Siong’s neighbourhood store network, convenience and fresh produce offering remain key drivers of everyday grocery purchases.

The actual impact remains uncertain, and Sheng Siong believes that convenience, proximity and the availability of fresh produce will remain important drivers of everyday grocery purchases, supported by its extensive neighbourhood store network. Sheng Siong understands it has to remain nimble and said that it will adapt its strategies as developments unfold. This is also amidst headwinds as labour, transport and electricity costs continue to weigh on margins.

Sheng Siong is probably a hold for growth-oriented investors due to muted near-term organic catalysts and cross-border risks.

However, the stock is a buy / accumulate on weakness for long-term income investors, as the panic-induced 14% drop prices in near-term friction and provides an appealing entry point for a defensive, cash-generative grocery leader.

Sheng Siong will still aim to deliver growth as it aims to open at least 3 new stores per year. However it is slower than before as Sheng Siong opened 7 new stores in 9M2026 and 12 comparable new stores in FY2025.

Conclusion

Sheng Siong’s recent sell-off underscores the reality that even top-tier defensive retailers face domestic maturation and cost headwinds. While growth in same-store sales weakened, the company’s robust balance sheet, extensive heartland footprint in Singapore make the recent dip a calculated buying opportunity for investors looking for a Singapore focused play..
